Our lawyers are subject to the rules of the regulatory body with whom they are registered.

Burness Paull is not authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority but we are licensed by the Law Society of Scotland to carry on incidental financial business and by the Solicitors Regulation Authority to carry out insurance distribution activities.

Complaints procedure for clients and third parties

We are committed to the highest standards in our service to clients and in all our business dealings. If at any point you become unhappy or concerned about the service that we have provided, and you would like to make a complaint, then please contact the partner responsible for your matter or your relationship partner who will be happy to discuss the matter with you. If you are still dissatisfied, you may invoke the Firm's complaints handling procedure. Complaints can be sent to complaints@burnesspaull.com and we will endeavour to respond to your message within 48 hours or as soon as possible. You will not be charged for the handling of your complaint.

We hope to be able to resolve your complaint however, if you remain dissatisfied, you may be entitled to refer the complaint to a relevant regulator. You can ask us to which regulator you should complain but, in general, if your complaint:

  1. Is about any matter other than a matter being handled by our English Law Dispute Resolution team or our English Real Estate team (in which case, please refer to point 2 below), or the behaviour or conduct of a solicitor registered in Scotland you may complain to the Scottish Legal Complaints Commission (“SLCC”), The Stamp Office, 10-14 Waterloo Place, Edinburgh EH1 3EG, 0131 201 2130, enquiries@scottishlegalcomplaints.org. See www.scottishlegalcomplaints.org.uk for more information. The SLCC operates time limits for accepting complaints, details of which are available from SLCC. However, the SLCC will disregard any time it considers that you were excusably unaware of the concerns you now have.
  2. Is about a matter being handled by our English Law Dispute Resolution team or our English Real Estate team, or a lawyer registered in England & Wales, you may be entitled to complain to the Legal Ombudsman, PO Box 6806, Wolverhampton, 0300 555 0333, enquiries@legalombudsman.org.uk. See www.legalombudsman.org.uk for further information, including details about eligibility to complain. The Legal Ombudsman operates time limits for accepting complaints, details of which are available from the Ombudsman.
  3. Is about the behaviour or conduct of this firm or a solicitor regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority in England, you may complain to that body. See www.sra.org.uk/consumers/problems page for more information.

We recognise that Alternative Dispute Resolution Regulations promote alternative dispute resolution as a means of redress for consumers in relation to unsatisfactory services but we have however chosen not to adopt an ADR process.
