“Burness Paull is a firm which is forward looking and which employs talented and innovative people.”
- Legal 500, 2020

The desire to constantly seek opportunities to improve the client experience and always find a ‘better way’ is deeply embedded in the DNA of Burness Paull.

Its roots lie in the energy and curiosity of our people and, as we’ve grown, we’ve supported that spirit with an enabling structure and process.

Experience has taught us that delivering real change, the kind that brings significant, long-term benefits to our clients, our people and our communities, is all about balancing the energy of ideas with intelligent process change and smart technology adoption.

We’ve reinforced our capacity to change with significant investment in Lean Process Improvement, training an in-house team of Lean facilitators with the ability to run Lean Rapid Improvement Events.

This capability sits alongside an expanding, in-house software development capability, designing and building fit-for-purpose digital solutions that help to optimise our core systems and help to enable people-driven processes.

Our Transformation and Innovation Group combines the vocational and technical sides of the firm within a single leadership team.

Their mandate is to foster change, ensure relevance to our clients & strategy and to be an enabling force in bringing smart thinking to bear on all aspects of our operation.

They are partnered in this objective by our Change Champions, a voluntary group of innovation and technology minded individuals, representative of the firm’s practices, sector groups and business service teams. Change Champions are vital in supporting early-stage ideas, by scoping out needs and helping to shape project plans.

Both these groups work directly with our clients to understand and support their change agenda. Given the variety of our client base we always aim for bespoke, adaptable solutions.

There’s a significant amount of experience we can bring to bear on most innovation challenges, but we always seek best fit as a priority for your needs.

Although never driven by technology alone, we foster relationships with a wider variety of established and emerging technology providers.

These have significantly enhanced our operational efficiency in several key areas and our early adoption has allowed us to play a significant role within industry groups and forums including the IBA, Lex Mundi and the Law Society of Scotland.

Artificial Intelligence to support Document Review, electronic signatures to facilitate paperless closes of major projects, document automation and secure document sharing are just some of the enhancements we’ve achieved to date - and we continue to push boundaries and explore new propositions as they emerge.

We have been working with Clarilis since 2015 to roll out document automation across our business and are continuously exploring how else we may use the technology available to us both internally and to support clients in their own projects. Driving efficiency is the obvious reason to use document automation however, we see the benefits as being far wider: these include improved consistency and quality of output, improved compliance, risk mitigation, more effective delegation and supervision and the ability to relieve our employees of some of the pressures they inevitably face when dealing with manual drafting of what are often very complex and lengthy legal documents.

“Burness Paull was one of our very first customers and an early adopter of the Clarilis technology. We have worked together for many years and have delivered a number of highly successful projects, not least because of their openness to innovation and identifying new opportunities both for themselves and their clients.” James Quinn, CEO and co-founder of Clarilis

As one of the most innovative national dance companies in the world, Scottish Ballet pushes creative boundaries.

Having partnered with Scottish Ballet since 2019, Burness Paull has further strengthened this relationship and become its first official Innovation Partner.

This reflects the firm’s commitment to nurturing creativity and tackling problems from a fresh perspective.

The partnership brings the two high-performing organisations together to connect through initiatives aimed at making both parties even more agile, inspiring and enabling growth.

This investment in smart innovation and new working practices will directly benefit the level of service we deliver to clients.
