Out Of Africa

Out Of Africa

It’s very rare for a solicitor to be given the opportunity to act like a High Court Judge. But that is the enthralling position I found myself in last week.  I was instructed by a South African law firm to act as independent solicitor in Scotland where a witness was giving evidence via video-link to a trial in the High Court in Johannesburg.

The instruction required that I over-see proceedings in Glasgow to: ensure there was no interference with the witness whilst giving evidence; answer questions from the Judge and counsel; and administer the oath to the witness in Glasgow as part of the South African proceedings.

And just to make matters more interesting, this was a ground breaking case; the first time a South African court had ever allowed witness testimony by video-link. The globalisation of the legal world can certainly make those days in the office a lot more exciting!
