Emma is a senior solicitor in our Public Law & Regulatory division, focussing on clients operating in the charity and not-for-profit sector. Emma trained with the firm and qualified into the team in September 2022.

Emma assists in a wide range of matters across the team working with both public sector and private sector clients. Emma advises clients on a wide range of matters including issues relating to corporate structures, corporate governance issues, applications for charitable status, as well as engaging with regulators such as the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR).

Burness Paull is also proud to partner with SCVO, Scotland’s national membership organisation for the voluntary sector, and Development Trusts Association Scotland (DTAS) in supporting their pro-bono legal helplines which provide pro-bono legal support to members of each of SCVO and DTAS. Emma regularly advises SCVO and DTAS members under this arrangement on a variety of ad hoc queries.

In addition to her work with charity and not-for-profit clients, Emma often assists public sector clients regarding the provision of financial assistance and other commercial arrangements.

Emma has experience advising community organisations within the renewable energy sector, and assisting community groups to engage with energy providers.

Emma completed a part-time secondment to Standard Life, part of Phoenix Group. 

Emma Maxwell and Emma Manson both had qualities of empathy and an ability to get to the nub of a problem very quickly. They explained the issues clearly in layman's terms and provided a number of possible options which took into account some prickly interpersonal issues on both sides of the dispute within the charitable organisation.
