Over the last six weeks, we have welcomed three interns to the firm via our partnership with Back Professionals United Kingdom. This partnership is part of our commitment to diversity and inclusion, ensuring equality of opportunity for all and the promotion of a workplace culture where all our people can succeed.

Our three interns were spread across the firm with one joining our Real Estate division, another joining our Private Client division, and Ziri Udeh-Ibe joining our BD & Marketing department.

We want to thank them again for all their hard work. But now we’ll hand it over to Ziri, who shares her experience on working with the firm.

As summer is a time to grow and develop, I wanted to use my summer break to gain more practical knowledge and skills in addition to what I learned in university. I decided on an internship as the best avenue to achieve this, as I was eager to improve my marketing skills and learn more about business development.

I’m grateful to Black Professionals Scotland for providing the internship opportunity. I knew Burness Paull would be a good fit for me as the firm promotes a people culture that is equally high performing.

The first week gave me the chance to get familiar with my lovely team and learn about the work they do. I was assigned a manager and two mentors who were always available for any guidance I needed, and the team’s collective effort to make my experience memorable was wonderful.

During my six weeks in the BD & Marketing team, I worked with various divisions, gaining a deeper understanding of their roles and responsibilities, understanding what business development initiatives are carried out for every division and the importance of developing and strengthening client relationships. I was kept busy with varied tasks such as client relationship mapping, filling a Key Client Review pack, updating website biographies, and collating CVs and credentials for bid documents. Spending time with the marketing team gave me a behind-the-scenes look at how the firms’ values, design and branding are key to all marketing activities.

This internship was an opportunity to explore a potential career pathway and evaluate how it aligns with me and what I intend to do in the future. I am grateful I got to experience it in a firm that cares about its services and people. In addition, I believe I have gained much more knowledge on how a law firm operates and its impact on wider society, which I only had a vague idea of previously - so that’s a bonus!

When I started this internship, I had clear goals in mind to learn, experience, and immerse myself in the day-to-day life of a professional setting, and I have achieved this. I am pleased to say my expectations were met, and my contributions were always valued.
