Burness Paull’s market-leading intellectual property team has been recognised at a prestigious industry awards event in London, with the firm taking home the prize in two categories at last night’s EMEA Managing IP Awards.

The annual ceremony celebrates the success of leading firms and their clients from across the EMEA region. Awards are presented to firms, individuals and companies behind the most innovative and challenging IP work of the past year, as well as those driving the international IP market.
Burness Paull won the award for Scotland IP Disputes Firm of the Year for the fourth year in a row and Colin Hulme, head of the firm’s IP practice, was named Scotland Practitioner of the Year – reinforcing his standing as Scotland’s foremost IP litigator.
Burness Paull’s top-ranked IP team is one of the largest in Scotland and advises high-profile clients on UK-wide contentious and non-contentious matters across sectors including financial services, media, creative industries, technology, life sciences, energy, food and drink, manufacturing, and the public sector.
The contentious side of the practice manages an ongoing spread of patent, trade mark, copyright, confidential information, and trade secrets disputes. This includes a recently commenced £400 million claim in the Court of Session, thought to be the highest value litigation ever initiated in Scotland.
The non-contentious practice advises on the full spectrum of commercial contracts and projects ranging from high-profile sponsorship, franchising and licensing agreements to bespoke IP audits and due diligence in significant M&A transactions.
Colin Hulme, head of the IP at Burness Paull, said: “We are delighted to have been recognised once again at the Managing IP Awards. I am very proud of the team, whose expertise and strength in depth is unmatched in Scotland. These awards are testament to their hard work and dedication in helping safeguard the valuable IP assets of our clients in Scotland, across and the UK, and internationally.
“Ideas create products, drive improvements and deliver innovation. Successful protection and exploitation of intellectual property is business critical for our clients and we’re grateful that they continue to place their trust in us to defend their interests and support their strategic objectives.”
