The Scaling Scotland: Building the Engine for the Next 50 Years of Prosperity report was published in November 2025, aiming to address Scotland’s “scale-up gap” by setting out recommendations designed to break through barriers and unlock long-term growth.
Funding was identified as one of the systemic factors that most influence a company’s ability to scale, with the research showing that equity remains the default funding route in Scotland, while corporate and venture debt options are underused and less well understood.
To further explore this theme, we are pleased to invite you to our upcoming webinar designed for those with an interest in the funding market in Scotland, including founders and scale-up business owners who want to better understand their funding options.
The recommendations call upon the public and private sector to improve awareness of venture debt for mid-sized scale ups and educate executive teams and boards on its risk-reward profile, and we are pleased to bring together a panel of experts who will share practical insights on navigating the funding options available.
We’ll be joined by Paul Mason, Head of Corporate Finance at CT and Cat Penny, a senior banker experienced in providing growth capital to high growth, who will help demystify the market and answer questions.
In this session, we will cover:
- An introduction to the Scaling Scotland report and its findings
- Venture Debt: is it a pipedream in Scotland?
- The current funding options in Scotland
- An adviser’s perspective
- A lender’s criteria
- Q&A
Our chair, Peter Lawson, was a panellist on the funding pillar of the Scaling Scotland report, and several founders, funders and advisers we work with had the opportunity to share their views and experiences.
