Claire Macpherson

Claire is a partner in our Private Client division. She has extensive experience in inheritance tax and capital gains tax planning for individuals, beneficiaries and executors and regularly advises clients in tax mitigation. She has a particular expertise in matters of succession law and domicile and the international aspects of cross border estates and in inheritance tax, capital gains tax and income tax issues for international clients.

She acts for a large number of individuals, particularly those involved in owner managed businesses, advising on all areas of trust and tax law and in the tax aspects of setting up Family Investment Companies. She has considerable experience in drafting wills and in setting up discretionary trusts, liferent trusts and trusts for disabled persons, for both tax planning purposes and asset protection. Claire also advises clients in connection with adult incapacity, including powers of attorney, intervention orders and guardianship orders.

Claire is a full member (TEP - Trust & Estate Practitioner) of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), having been awarded the STEP Diploma in Trusts and Estates (Scotland) with distinction. She was a prize winner at the STEP Excellence Awards in both 2012 and 2014 and has also been awarded the STEP Advanced Certificate in UK Tax for International Clients. Claire is also a tutor on the private client course on the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Glasgow.

Claire is dual accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in both Private Client Tax and Trust Law. She is also ranked as Band 4 in the High Net Worth Chambers directories, and as a ‘next generation partner’ on Legal 500 for the Personal Tax, Trusts and Executries division.
