Michael leads the firm's dedicated English Commercial Property team of 16 qualified lawyers and two trainees. Michael trained and qualified in the London office of Baker & McKenzie as a commercial property lawyer. He has 15 years’ experience as a partner at Burness Paull.
His main area of specialism is investment work - he acts for several mainstream institutional investor clients and this year has been involved in the purchase of the Archimedes and the Northwood portfolios (circa £100 million) and the sale of the Bluebell portfolio (circa £50 million). Michael also has a strong developer practice. Michael has lead numerous large scale development projects in recent years. He has a background in advising on all sides of these developments. He is currently acting for site promoters, developers, contractors, funders and funds (forward funded and forward purchased and sold). He has experience of hotel development, mixed use retail developments, student accommodation schemes, residential development (both in blocks of flats and otherwise). In particular, he is experienced in the development of residential properties above retail and leisure facilities; in particular dealing with enfranchisement and pre-emption rights potentially available to private long leaseholders.
Michael's specialist knowledge also covers property finance where he is heavily involved on both lender and the borrower side of both acquisition and development funding transactions.
